Lycian Way hiking and trekking tours in Turkey

To choose a Lycian Way trek, do not start from the reputation of the entire trail. Select a section, then compare terrain, ascent and descent, heat, water, overnight stops, transfers and exits. A guided trip suits travellers who want group leadership and managed logistics; self-guided travel requires genuine confidence in navigation and stage management.

Choose a Lycian Way section and travel style

The Lycian Way combines very different coastal and mountain sections. Use these criteria to compare the eastern area covered by our trips, the timing, the difficulty and the logistical responsibility before requesting an itinerary.

Choose a section, not a general reputation

The Lycian Way is an extensive trail network between Fethiye and the Antalya region. Coastal paths, limestone slopes, forest sections, villages and archaeological sites do not create one uniform difficulty. A day around Çıralı, Olympos or Kekova therefore does not automatically describe another part of the route.

Start with the stages actually proposed. For each one, record the start, finish, terrain, ascent and descent, walking time, confirmed water, overnight stop and practical exit or shorter option. A recent track and offline map support this review; they do not replace local access checks.

Timing, heat, water and access conditions

Spring and autumn are often considered for coastal sections, but a season does not guarantee conditions on a particular date. Heat, wind, recent rain, ground conditions, water availability and temporary restrictions can change a stage or require an earlier start.

Check the local forecast, water points and transfers shortly before departure. For a higher section, assess temperature, visibility and possible snow separately. The plan should retain a workable exit and a written alternative if access, accommodation or transport becomes unavailable.

Choose between guided and self-guided travel

The level 3 shown for both trips is a first comparison, but responsibilities differ. On a guided trip, the guide leads the group and the organiser coordinates the planned operation. On a self-guided trip, the walker must follow the supplied route, manage pace, recognise changing conditions and reach the agreed point.

Before choosing self-guided travel, assess navigation, walking on stony ground, descents, heat, water management and turnaround decisions honestly. Baggage, transfers, meals, accommodation and assistance are never implied by the words ‘self-guided’; read them on the trip page and confirm them in the written proposal.

Guided or self-guided: which trip should you read first?

The two published trips cover the eastern Lycian Way with different durations and operating models. This comparison guides your reading; only the itinerary and written proposal confirm stages and services.

  • Lycian Way, self-guided — Start here if you want a 7-day self-guided format and have the independence required to follow the proposed stages; the catalogue lists level 3.

Frequently asked questions about the Lycian Way

Which section of the Lycian Way should you choose?

Choose from the stages actually proposed, not the reputation of the whole trail. Compare terrain, ascent and descent, heat, water, overnight stops, access and exit options with your experience.

When should you hike the Lycian Way?

Spring and autumn are often considered for the coast, but timing depends on the section and conditions. Check weather, heat, recent rain, water, access and temporary restrictions before departure.

Should you choose a guided or self-guided trek?

Choose guided travel if you want group leadership and managed logistics. Self-guided travel suits walkers who can manage navigation, pace, water, fallback decisions and arrival at the agreed point.

Can you hike the Lycian Way without camping?

It depends on the section and confirmed overnight stops. Do not assume accommodation or camping: check open establishments, local rules, land access, water and transfers stage by stage.
